Test Cases for Off-premise HPC Evaluations

NJIT is in the process of investigating the viability of using off-premise resources to provide at least part of the high performance computing (HPC) capability for its researchers.

NJIT Information Services and Technology Academic and Research Computing Systems (ARCS) will contact several vendors that provide HPC services to set up and run a test suite using the vendors' resources. ARCS will collect performance metrics and costs from these tests.

In order to provide a common basis for the evaluations, ARCS will build a development environment including compilers, MPI compilers and associated scientific libraries. In order to provide a standard datum, the same development environment will be used for each vendor.

  1. Compile and run Gromacs 5.1.1 on CPU nodes.
  2. Compile and run Gromacs 2016.4 on GPU nodes.
  3. Compile and run the NAS benchmarks. These are a suite of benchmarks developed by NASA to test the performance of HPC clusters. These benchmarks include:
    • MPI parallel (run code over a non-homogeneous distributed system)
    • OpenMP parallel (run code on a homogeneous shared memory system)
  4. Develop and run filesystem performance tests (IOzone)
