Position Title : Academic and Research Computing Analyst

The Academic and Research Computing Analyst is principally responsible for the support of advanced academic and research computing systems. Such support is wide-ranging and includes, but is not limited to: systems administration, application administration, and advanced support and consulting to faculty, researchers, and students. The position is expected to exhibit a high level of problem-solving ability and resourcefulness and is competent to work on fairly complex applications and systems software with only general direction. The position works collaboratively with a wide range of academics, technical staff, and students in providing a responsive academic and research computing infrastructure.

Essential Functions

  • Installs, configures, supports, and maintains advanced public-access and research laboratory Linux workstations and servers in a research university environment.
  • Installs, configures, supports, and maintains software for advanced academic and research applications. Software may be a commercial product, open source, or locally developed.
  • Installs, configures, supports, and maintains middleware and database software (e.g., Oracle, MySQL).
  • Installs, configures, supports, and maintains access to external cloud computing resources appropriate for academic and research purposes.
  • Monitors, tunes, and optimizes system performance; performs benchmarks and evaluates results.
  • Troubleshoots hardware and software problems; interacts with vendors.
  • Plans for and responds to service outages and other problems within the academic and research computing technology infrastructure.
  • Writes scripts for a wide-variety or purposes; automates tasks.
  • Consults with faculty, researchers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students on a wide variety of projects that involve computational resources (e.g., algorithms, databases and information systems, web technologies, artificial intelligence, modeling and simulation, data mining and other tools characteristic of large scale informatics.)
  • Assists in implementation of local cloud and high performance computing infrastructure.
  • Assists in the evaluation and planning for hardware, software, and new technologies.
