Draft policy document.

Summary

  • Researchers using resources in the Tartan central shared infrastructure Tartan Initiative are allocated certain dedicated base resources.
    • Dedicated resources that are needed by researchers beyond the base allocations must be acquired by the researcher.
    • Researchers must also acquire specialized resources that they need but which are lacking in the Tartan infrastructure.
    • Resources acquired by researchers are dedicated to those researchers.
  • The current cost schedules for resource acquisition are presented
  • Two surveys of researcher services policies at universities are presented

Costs for acquisition of research computing infrastructure for individual or group use

Research projects, comprised of one or more researchers, are allocated at no charge certain base resources in the NJIT research computing infrastructure : Base Resources. Except for the shared use of HPC and Hadoop/Spark clusters, the base resources are dedicated to the research projects.

Base resources are comprised of the following categories :

  • Storage and backup
  • On-premise computational resources
  • Virtual machines

Purchasing dedicated resources : on-premise

Storage and backup

The costs of purchasing disk storage, and optionally, associated backup, beyond the base allocation of storage, are given in this table.

Computational resources

The costs of purchasing dedicated on-premise computational resources, beyond the base HPC acess, are given in this table.

Catalog of node options for the Kong.njit.edu high performance computing (HPC) cluster

Node catalog lists the supported node options for the Kong cluster - which is available to all NJIT researchers - that can be purchased by researchers for their dedicated use. Please contact arcs@njit.edu for approximate costs. (This catalog, which is somewhat out of date, is scheduled for a refresh in Summer 2017)

For reference, the on-premise computational resources available to researchers are listed here.

Virtual machines

The cost of purchasing a virtual machine (VM), beyond the base VM allocation, is given in this table.

Purchasing dedicated resources : off-premise

There are instances in which the best option for a researcher is to employ Off-premise resources.

Cost schedules vary for such resources.

Researcher services policies at other universities

The Educause Research Computing Constituent Group is being surveyed on policies on base allocations and costs for dedicated resources in the following on-premise areas :

  • Storage
  • HPC
  • Big data
  • Virtual infrastucture

The detailed survey results to date are : ResearchComp

A tally of base allocation policies is : ResearchCompSum

Researcher services policies at Benchmark, Aspirational, and selected New Jersey universities

Universities in the Benchmark, Aspirational, selected NJ lists were contacted in an effort to determine their base allocation of storage and HPC resources, and the costs of purchasing dedicated resources in those areas.

The results are : Benchmark, Aspirational, NJ summary
