Gents,
FYI, in the past two days we've received two requests to install
already purchased equipment in GITC 4320.
Both were purchased for use in an office/lab, but were deemed too
noisy and hot for such an environment.
Both also stated virtualized hosts were not suitable for their
research.
Both systems are in tower cases.
These requests show that active funded researchers
would greatly benefit from Matt's
"Research Computing Rack Pod Concept"
(COR-9965) as it provides a
proactive solution for their needs. Likewise IST would benefit by
not expending person-hours on such requests.
A quick check of 4320 shows these possible physical locations,
assuming power is available:
- Rack at G14 (UCS Raque 4), makeshift metal shelf in place.
-
Rack at G9, existing drawer from deprovisioned Sun system
(E450?).
-
Atop the half-rack at B2-B3. It does have top cooling vents,
but these are already blocked by misc junk and top is cool to
the touch.
-
Workbench labeled "UCS Table" G10-G13.
Clearly a location that simplifies later rack pod deployment is
preferred.
Formal PRs are forthcoming for each system.
Thank you,
~Kevin
